A bathhouse puts heat, cold and water under one roof. If you have never been, it can feel like everyone else knows the rules. They are simpler than they look.

What is inside

Most Sydney bathhouses have some mix of a traditional sauna, a steam room, a cold plunge or ice bath, and one or more warm pools, often magnesium or mineral pools kept between 34 and 38°C. Each venue page on The Soak List lists exactly what is in the building under "What's inside".

How long to book

Sessions are sold by time: usually 60, 90 or 120 minutes. For a first visit, 90 minutes is enough to try everything without rushing. Early morning and weekday sessions are quieter and cheaper; see our guide to bathhouses under $50.

Booking

Almost every bathhouse here asks you to book ahead, and some take a deposit. A few take walk-ins when there is space, but on weekends it is worth booking.

What to bring

Swimwear, always. Beyond that it depends on the venue: some include towels, robes and a locker; others hire them out or ask you to bring your own. Check the venue page before you go, because it saves a surprise at the front desk.

How a session usually goes

There is no right order, but a common loop looks like this:

  1. Start somewhere warm: a warm pool or the steam room.
  2. Move to the sauna for as long as feels comfortable.
  3. Cool off in the cold plunge, or under a cold shower if the plunge feels like too much.
  4. Rest. Most bathhouses have somewhere to sit or lie down between rounds.
  5. Repeat at your own pace.

Nobody is timing you. Go at your own speed, get out whenever you like, and if you are pregnant or unsure whether heat and cold suit you, ask the venue before you book.

Etiquette

Keep your voice down, especially in the sauna and steam room, and leave your phone in the locker. Some venues run silent sessions where talking is off the table altogether. Shower before you get into the pools.
